There is a very easy way to return from a casino with a small fortune: go there with a large one. ~Jack Yelton
Vegas is for making memories, not money. Unless you and your MIT buddies concoct a genius plan to take Vegas for millions, you are going to lose money. However, you can slow the bleeding. Here are some tips on the odds:
know how odds work-the odds correspond to players familiar with the games strategy, if you suck and are unlucky, you could do much worse
know which games have good odds-according to the numbers the casino is always at an advantage. However blackjack, craps, and baccarat give the casino less than a 1% edge. This means if you play for an hour with $1500 you would only lose $12.
keno is crap-not to be confused with craps, but this game gives the house a 25% advantage. Don't play it if you want your money to last
slot jocks-expect to lose about 10% of your money, slots are programmed to return an average of 92%

Still haven't learned how to tie your own ties?
Leaving bowties aside, there are a few ways to tie a standard tie:
- Windsor
- Half Windsor
- Four in Hand
- Pratt
--- all based on the width of the knot and the thickness of the tie material. And then there's all those accessories -- you can slide the tie bar across, clasp a tie clip, pierce your tie with a tie tack, or restrain your tie with a tie chain...
To finish things off, make sure you remember the tie "dimple", and you'll be dressed for sucess.

There is not any memory with less satisfaction than the memory of some temptation we resisted.
James Branch Cabell
Sure, there are things we'd like to forget, but more often than not, most of us wish we were better at remembering. One of the best tips for improving memory is to write things down. Since this isn't always possible, the experts provide us with some advice on how to improve your memory.
Use the journey method to visualize lists by placing the objects along a familiar path.
All memory is based on elaborate enconding- the more vivid the association, the stronger the memory. Therefore, try to assign vivid images to mundane items.
Names can be critical in a business or social setting. When introduced repeat the name, ask how to spell it, and create an image or ryhme including the name and face in your head.

The blood is now running through my alcohol stream.
Homer Simpson
While there are many folk remedies to cure hangovers, a few are actually substantiated by science.
Here are a few of the best remedies:
- Burnt Toast- carbon, used to filter impurities, is the active ingredient here (finally a niche for my culinary skills)
- Eggs-cysteine helps to break up the toxins
- banans-replaces potassium and electrolytes
- water-fights dehydration
- fruitjuice-fructose provides energy
- painkillers-only without caffeine
Bonus tip: veisalgia is the formal name for hangovers, from the Norwegian word for "uneasiness following debauchery" (kveis) and the Greek word for "pain" (algia). I'm sure it would be interesting to attempt to recall and use this word once you know you will experience veisalgia the next morning.

Don't worry be happy
Bobby McFerrin
... at work. Yuppies have their self improvement books. Everyone's read them. However, the yuppie generation has moved on from the superficial South Beach Diet and the silly 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, to something more important: happiness.
The Art of Happiness at Work. While not a radical departure from The Art of Happiness, this book is worth reading. It will keep you sane during those days when you wish you could get "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" out of you head. The Dalai Lama practices what he preaches and can rarely be found without a smile on his face. However stressful your job can getsful thing in the world, but he is a spiritual leader who lost his country, so he's qualified to teach us all a few things.

Some say you're the best... but others are a bit more honest.
Even though you've had vast classroom experience, there are still things you could improve on at work. Feedback is essential to learning those things that you don't know you don't know- that you suck at.
In order to act on feedback you must first receive feedback. It helps to seek out feedback. Ask coworkers and managers for it. Show them you mean it by asking for feedback on specific issues. "How am I doing?" will only get you a one word answer. Show that you are a good recipient of feedback by listening, taking criticism well, and working on your weaknesses.
Be persistent, either you will eliminate all of their concerns and be on the fast track for promotion, or they will tire of answering your requests and make things up, which would be amusing.

Open a Roth IRA now.
With a Roth IRA you put after-tax money in now, and pay no taxes when you take it out. If you start investing at a young age you will benefit from the miracle of compound interest. Another reason to start now is that as soon as you start making more than $100K, you can't contribute. Don't let the man take your money.
